TL;DR Rather heavy on the wallet, but you get what you pay for. Beautiful fresh sashimi that transports one immediately to another dimension.

Kuro Maguro recently had a 50% offer on their Ootoro Meshi bowls to celebrate their first anniversary. I've not heard of Kuro Maguro before, but I'm glad that I'm finally acquainted with this establishment.

Kuro Maguro is a Japanese sashimi restaurant, so they serve mainly sashimi, sushi and donburis.

Food

Well, we came here for only one reason, the Ootoro Meshi. Other than it being on discount, I've not had Ootoro (fatty tuna) since I last went to Japan. Good sashimi is ridiculously expensive, and good Maguro (tuna) sashimi is twice as ridiculously expensive.

The Ootoro Meshi is a bowl of vinegared rice that comes with five slices of Ootoro sashimi resting on a tiny mound of pickled garlic, with a dollop of wasbi on top.

I first fell in love with Ootoro in Japan and I'm glad I finally get to re-experience it here in Singapore without my wallet bleeding to death. Ootoro is on an entirely different level compared to salmon. If the timbre of salmon was an alto note resonating in bubbly river water, ootoro is a delightful mezzo-soprano that rings like clear spring water. One bite and the tone of the tuna taste distinctly resonates in my mouth. The beauty of the ootoro is in the fat of course, it adds a roundness to the flavour of ootoro, and beautiful melt-in-your mouth texture. Instead of it echoing in your mouth like maguro, it rings once and disappears into the air, and you're left longing for it, chasing for that last taste it left in your mouth. Due to the freshness of the fish, there's no fishiness at all, and you can deeply appreciate the ootoro in all its beauty.

The Ootoro Meshi also comes with a bowl of miso soup, and an honourary mention must be given for this bowl of miso soup is miles apart from that watered down miso soup you get in food court set meals. No comparison of course, but I do appreciate a bowl of good miso soup when I get one. Deep and complex miso flavour, with a strong bonito taste, and if you're lucky, you also get a tiny clam that found its way in. It's a solid bowl of miso soup because it's not just a one-note taste profile of miso, but also buttressed by the stock flavour coming from the bonito and clams.

Pricing

Originally, $32.80, but just for one weekend, it was $16.40, making it very very reasonable pricing for the quality and freshness of the fish.

On a regular day, most of their other donburis are around the $30+ price range, which would make this a splurge in my opinion. They have some cheaper donburis at $20+ with the cheaper fish like the salmon and maguro, but I would probably leave this for special occasions for when I can go all out and enjoy that beautiful ootoro again.

Kuro Maguro also does sashimi, naturally, but the prices for that are not within my reach, unfortunately. Maybe for special occasions only.
