[TW] Lay's Taiwan Spring 2019 Chips: Milky Sakura and White Peach

TL;DR Milky Sakura is only worth as much as its novelty. But would literally import cartons of White Peach back to Singapore.

Can we start reviewing potato chip flavours as if they were spring/autumn drops from fashion houses? We probably can. And we start with Lay's Taiwan's Spring 2019 drop.

Milky Sakura and White Peach.

If you've been anywhere near a Taiwanese 7-11 in March or April this year (which is 2019, if that needs to be clarified), then you would have probably caught these two flavours chilling on a shelf somewhere with their other less posh chip buddies.

I mean, are these not the most aesthetic chip packagings you've seen in a while? That white marble background, pastel colours, and matte finish. What we have here are definitely avant garde chips headed for the runway.

But let's talk about how it tastes too.

Milky Sakura flavour

I must confess I am the most suspicious towards this pack of Milky Sakura chips. Okay, Sakura flavour? I've heard of. They saturate Japan in the Sakura season every year. But Milky Sakura. Now that's new.

Once you open the pack of chips, you can immediately smell a milk powder smell. Yeah, I know, it's strange. The milk flavour is the first one that hits when you start eating it. There is an ever so slight floral fragrance as you eat the chip. But it disappears as quickly as it came. The chip is light and crisp in the mouth, which really carries the subtle flavour well. Before you even finish eating the chip, it returns to the profile of a regular chip: slightly salty, slightly carby. It's probably a good thing that the flavour is subtle and mild, any stronger and it could definitely become an offensive chip.

Honestly, it's probably the kind of flavour that grows on you. But you won't grow to like it in the span of a packet of chips. I don't see myself buying this flavour again, and it really only has value as a novelty flavour.

White Peach flavour

On the other hand, I was super excited to try this White Peach flavour. I can't imagine how a fruity chip might taste like, so the anticipation is definitely present. And I am usually a fan of peach flavoured sweets so I was intrigued to see how the flavour might translate onto a chip.

If you stick your head into this packet of chips, you will be able to smell the artificial peach flavour that you would typically find in gummies and sweets. The chips taste exactly like how they smell, artificial peach flavouring. Yes, it's strange. It's a peach gummy in chip form. It's a carby peach gummy. It is strange. But it is good. Sooo good. The chips, like the Milky Sakura chips, are light and crisp, which complement the fruity flavour well.

This is a sweet chip. Yes, I'm still currently trying to wrap my head around that idea. But this flavour is evidence that sweet chips can exist, not just savoury chips, and they can actually be good. You know, if I could subsist on chips only, I would literally bring home cartons of this. Just to last me through the year at least.

Fair warning though, you'll probably only like this if you like peach flavoured gummies. If not, the artificial flavouring might put you off.

Is it worth it?

Each packet is sold for NTD$45. That's SGD$2. Each packet has about 80g of chips. I would say that's a fair price. Most Lay's novelty flavours of this size are usually around $2.50 in Singapore. If the flavour interests you, just get it

And a budget heads up: you get 40% off the second pack until 9 April 2019.

Where to get it?

Available in 7-11 convenience stores all over Taiwan. They dropped this flavour for March and April 2019, and I'm not sure if it'll come back in subsequent years. But I do hope they do (at least for the White Peach one).

Notes:
  • I got these chips in Alishan, on top of a mountain, so the lower air pressure makes these packets look like they are bursting.
  • If it helps anyone, in Mandarin:
    Lay's = 樂事
    Milky Sakura = 粉櫻牛奶
    White Peach = 白桃幕斯
    potato chips = 洋芋片
