I say this with full awareness that I'm not the most experienced connoisseur of cinnamon rolls. My first introduction to cinnamon rolls were as the kanelsnagle (literally: cinnamon snail, how cute!) baked by a Danish dorm-mate in Copenhagen. Just months before. Look, I'm an Asian girl living in the tropics. Cinnamon rolls are just not a thing here like in America or in Scandinavia.
That first cinnamon roll experience was very delicious, but I didn't go crazy. Risø Mat & Kaffebar in Tromsø is where I became obsessed with the cinnamon roll. In Norwegian, the cinnamon roll is called the kanelsnurrer (literally: cinnamon swirl). We didn't go into Risø with the intention to get a kanelsnurrer but got one anyway because it was relatively cheap and we could all do with some kanelsnurrers in the middle of winter.
Oh! It was soooo soft, slightly warm, sweet enough, spiced with some Norsk koselig. The warm fluffiness of the kanelsnurrer literally warms you from your stomach out, and somehow this effect seemed even more prominent in the Norwegian winter.
It was so addictive, that I had to grab three more on the way out.
(Just to clarify, koselig is not a spice, but the Norwegian idea of warmth and cosiness.)
Strangely enough, Risø is actually not known for its cinnamon rolls, but its world-class coffee and reasonably-priced brunch food (for Norway). Ah perhaps it was my inexperienced tastebuds after all, or perhaps the Norwegian winter, that made this kanelsnurrer such a beautiful experience.
I mean, we did have brunch food too.
But they were not quite as memorable as the warm, soft, and fluffy kanelsnurrer.
I went to sleep that night googling kanelsnurrer recipes. Perhaps one day, I'll be able to recreate this magical experience... in the tropics.
