I love the Houjicha ice cream at Matchaya, and they do great Matcha things in general. But once in a while, they go out of the way, and create beautiful seasonal concoctions.

This Chinese New Year, they have this beautiful Yuzu parfait at $8.50.

Yuzu soft serve, honey cornflakes, candied orange peel, sesame love letter, and yuzu syrup

The Yuzu soft serve ice cream was beautiful. The Yuzu flavour was so distinct and prominent that I had to force myself to slowly savour every bite and let the flavours permeate my entire mouth. This flavour is further enhanced by the Yuzu syrup that makes the flavour even more intense.

Other than the Yuzu soft serve, the honey cornflakes and candied orange peel add complexity to the texture. I love the crunch the cornflakes add, and the honey flavour also surprisingly added a pleasant layer to the flavour profile of the Yuzu ice cream. The love letter adds a more delicate and wafer-thin crunch compared to the cornflakes. The candied orange peels added another dimension with the chewy texture.

Every element of the Yuzu parfait is perfectly balanced with the rest. Definitely something I wish would go on their permanent menu, but probably keeps its desirability better as a seasonal item.
