A short brief on one of the best creations ever, the melon pan メロンパン, for the unacquainted:
Melon pan literally means melon bread. It doesn't contain any melons, but the crust on top looks like a melon. Thus.
In one of the back streets of Asakusa, parallel to the popular shopping street leading up to Senso-ji, I found the biggest, fluffiest melon pan I've ever eaten in my life. I say found but it's not like I walked past and knew instantly that my life would be changed. The wonders of the Internet alerted me to the existence of this monstrous beauty and I hunted it down.
This melon pan, three times the size of a normal melon pan, tastes like a cloud. The outer crust is crispy and slightly sweet, and then insides so airy and fluffy (and also still sweet, it's a sweet bread). I was brought to heaven eating this, if not I would have taken a photo of the insides!
You can get this with ice cream inside too! Which I regret very much not trying while I'm writing this post. Though I think I would still prefer the original so I can fully enjoy its fluffiness.
Do go early to buy this! They only sell a fixed number every day, and they are usually sold out by the time it's afternoon, maybe around 3pm.
Value
The jumbo melon pans sell for ¥200/SGD2.50 each, or ¥500/SGD6.20 for three.
It's a pretty expensive bread if you consider how it's basically air. But oh what a delightful treat! Absolutely worth it!
