TL;DR Sour onion fries not cheese fries, but still yum
So McDonalds recently came up with a cheese fries that you can buy a la carte for $4.20 or pay 80c to upgrade your meal to.
Did someone say cheese fries? I’M THERE.
Now before we start, let’s do some recap. On the all-time classic KFC Cheese Fries. Everyone has a different cheese fries story, but mine starts with KFC Cheese Fries. Classic nacho-cheese sauce with mayonnaise (all my life I’ve always thought it was sour cream till recently T_T) and some spring onions. They used to do this with thinner fries and changed it to more thick-cut fries a few years ago. I don’t mind, there’s more of a bite to the fries, although the surface area to volume ratio has decreased. Ahhh KFC Cheese Fries, they’ve accompanied me on so many hungry and lonely evenings where I decide fries can be a meal too.
HOWEVER, they also used to sell this for $4 but raised the price to $4.20. Hey what’s 20 cents right? Nothing except that the fries portion also decreased by at least a third. -angry-
Despite this, KFC Cheese fries will always be a classic in my heart. No one, NO ONE, absolutely no one does Cheese Fries like KFC. Can McDonalds match up?
Yes, yes absolutely.
So McDonalds has tried to one-up KFC by adding bacon to their fries. BACON. And also replaced the mayonnaise with sour cream.
I bought this a few days after McDonalds launched their Cheese Fries. And was very lucky to get a generous helping of cheese sauce, sour cream and bacon. Stayed away the first few days due to complaints of not enough toppings and I’m happy they’ve sorted out these kinks pretty fast.
In fact, I think the toppings are slightly too generous. Okay, I should be thankful. The sour cream flavour entirely overpowered the cheese sauce. Not complaining, I love sour cream. Sour cream chips is my go-to and now I’m just eating it in fries version. But would I call this cheese fries? Nah, not really. It’s sour cream fries to me.
The bacon is also a bit useless. I don’t think it adds anything to the taste or texture, since it’s not crispy and there’s so little of it. The function of bacon is like the that of the spring onions in KFC Cheese Fries. Colour. Though I think the green has a better effect.
That said, here are the important questions:
Would I pay $4.20 to get this a la carte? Yes.
Would I upgrade my meal for 80c to get this? Yes.
Can this beat KFC Cheese Fries? It’s a close fight. It won’t beat KFC in terms of cheese, but it’s on par in terms of deliciousness, and wins in terms of fries serving.
Personally, I think McDonalds has done us a great favour by introducing cheese sour cream fries. It’s pretty different from your run-of-the-mill cheese fries, and I definitely hope this will be a permanent menu item.
