To celebrate winning an award, Omakase Burger recently had a 1-for-1 promotion for all their burgers and set meals. Did someone say 1-for-1 burgers? I'm there.
The burgers that I eat most are from McDonald's (yes, kill me if you need to), but I can appreciate a good burger when I eat one. A fresh beef patty is not even competition to McDonald's factory beef. Unfortunately good beef burgers are usually quite heavy on the wallet, so I really don't have them much. Thank heavens for 1-for-1 promos then! (And boyfriends to eat them with.) *bliss*
I almost had a hard time locating Omakase Burger. Well... almost.
I am a cheapo but am I going to queue for so long when I'm starving? I'm starving.
So I came back on another day right after lunch when there was virtually no queues.
Omakase Burger is located in a "Food Park" called Picnic. It's basically a fancy food court. A very beautiful fancy food court. Walking into Picnic is like walking into a make-believe fantasy garden. Wow I would even hold a wedding here.
Great place to chill with friends. But also great place to take instagram photos if you so needed.
No time for that, let's get on to food.
When you enter Picnic, they will give you one of those handheld devices, which you use to order from whichever stall you want, and you'll make payment at the end of your food adventure. Omakase Burger is just one of the stalls in Picnic out of many other very delicious looking ones. It's free seating and self-service, so it's pretty free and easy.
Er wait, is that a menu I spot? Yeah, a bit mislead by "Omakase" here (which in sushi restaurants means it's up to the chef to decide what to let you eat) but we'll carry on. :)
Food
We ordered the most expensive set, the Super Set, because we are super kiasu and want everything in our burger. It comes with an Ultimate Cheeseburger, a premium drink, and premium sides. The Ultimate burger is topped with everything! Smoked bacon, mushrooms, and onions.
For the premium side, we got cheese fries, and for the premium drink, we got "Mexican Coke".
The cheese fries were meh, they tasted exactly like the $3 cheese fries in a certain shady Western shop in Clementi's Cityvibe. Yes, there's a looooot of cheese sauce, but it could have been a bit more premium with something like sour cream or mayonnaise to add a bit more complexity to the taste.
The "Mexican Coke" was underwhelming. What makes it deserving of being priced higher than regular coke other than being in a fancy "vintage" glass bottle? I don't know. It tastes a bit more diluted, a bit less intense, a bit less sweet than regular coke. But not worth the price mark up.
Yeah, if you're reading this, just go with other premium sides/drinks.
At least the burger was really good. The buns were surprising really really soft, and soaked up all the juicy goodness that leaked out of the beef patty. The beef patty was super juicy and delicious. We asked for medium rare and it was like eating a seared steak tartare. The insides were almost raw and it was like eating beef sashimi (lol). It was really closer to rare than medium rare. I don't hate it anyway, I rather it be under cooked, than over cooked and become dry and tough.
I'm on the fence about the rest of the burger. It's really personal preference at this point. I prefer my onions caramelised, softer and sweeter, to balance the savoury beef patty. While the onions in this burger were "sauteed", they were still pretty raw and crunchy.
I also prefer a stronger and aged cheese, to cut through the beef taste. But this cheese was a lot milder in taste.
The bacon was very crispy and added to the texture of the burger, but didn't do much to add complexity to the taste of the burger.
Overall, it is still a solid burger. Not my favourite burger because of the toppings, but the core of the burger, the beef, still shines through. Not sure if it's deserving of being the "best burger in Singapore" either as it claims. I've definitely had better at cheaper.
Value
The Super Set we ordered, the most expensive set, is $24.90 (before GST). A la carte, the burger would cost $20.5.
The cheapest option is a simple Omakase burger (buns, beef patty, cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, sauce) which is $16.90 a la carte, and $18.90 as a set with regular fries and a non-premium drink.
It's veering on the pricey side a bit. While the Ultimate Cheeseburger was a great meal, it was only worth it because of the 1-for-1 this time, and I don't think I would order that again. I would probably just get a simple Omakase Burger if I ever find myself here again.
