TL;DR Good second-tier durian dessert. Worth a try for the casual durian lover, not for the picky durian fanatics.
McDonald's nowadays very smart ah, just keep coming up with new stuff every few weeks, and all my money fly away.
Well, they've outdone themselves this time with a D24 Durian McFlurry. Seriously, durian? That's a bold move. One point for you, McDonald's.
Worth the hype? I don't know. I have mixed feelings.
It's not great, and that's since it's a first food chain after all. But it's not all that bad. There is a strange mixture of a real, authentic durian flavour and a fake, artificial durian taste. Personally, I think the ice cream is the one that tastes artifical while the durian puree (or whatever you want to call the yellow gloop they add in) packs a stronger and more authentic durian flavour.
There are also definitely real durian bits, as advertised. But personally, it's not much of a game changer for me. The durian bits are quite small, and do not make this McFlurry better or worse.
Obviously this ice cream is not going to taste like the real deal. And we cannot expect it to be on the same tier as the best durian desserts. But it tastes like a good second-tier durian dessert. And that's quite an achievement, we have to give this one to McDonald's.
The taste actually reminds me of durian kueh, somewhat. Perhaps that's what happens when you try to preserve the drain flavour for a longer time.
Worth a try if you're not picky about the kind of durian flavour you like.
Price: $4
