Folks and Stories: Cookies with a Personality

TL;DR Cookies with a personality is a cute and hip idea. But unfortunately the execution falls short with most cookies coming off as stale and overly sweet.

So thanks to my fervent enthusiasm in participating in Instagram giveaways, I recently received a $10 voucher to spend at a new local online pop-up called Folks and Stories. Folks and Stories, according to themselves, specialise in selling "Cookies With Personality".

The concept is cute and interesting. Cookies with a personality. I can see it being great for gifts, picking out a cookie based on the type of person you think the other party is. But novelty does not equal to taste.

They have 10 different cookies currently based on 10 different personality profiles. I really was interested in the taste so I ordered them based on the flavour and not the personality profile.

The packaging is pretty cute. Which really advances the argument for it being a good gift. Each cookie is sealed in a plastic packaging and then put in another plastic box that has some cute designs on it. I feel like the packaging is a bit excessive, but they did help protect the cookies from the eternal chaos of my bag.

I ordered six cookies: Salt of the Earth, Daytime Dreamer, Quirky Tastemaker, Ambitious Sailor, Busy Bee, and Dark Knight.

Salt of the Earth

Salt of the Earth is a basic butter and sugar cookie with both milk and dark chocolate.

This is a pretty basic cookie, and from the name, suggests that it's the kind of basic that is meant to be consistently reliable and dependable. The cookie however falters. There's a staleness about the cookie that makes it disappointing. The cookie is also overwhelmingly sweet and the fragrance which I've come to expect from good cookies is missing. The cookie is also supposed to be finished with a "pinch of salt" which is not evident at all. The chocolate was generous and good quality, perhaps the only saving grace of this cookie. But overall, a pretty disappointing cookie.

Daytime Dreamer

Daytime Dreamer is a basic butter and sugar cookie with a hidden chocolate brownie centre.

I was pretty excited for this. The concept appeals to the dreamer in all of us. And who can say no to a cookie with a brownie centre?

This cookie was overwhelmingly sweet, both the cookie itself and the brownie. The sweetness really overpowered the butter and chocolate flavour that should have also been present. Perhaps this cookie is better suited for somebody with a sweeter tooth, but it's definitely not a cookie that I can finish in one sitting as the sweetness becomes too much after two bites.

Quirky Tastemaker

Quirky Tastemaker is a rosemary-infused brown butter cookie with dark chocolate.

This was a cookie I was really interested in when I was ordering them. "Rosemary-infused brown butter" is not something you see often, much less in a cookie.

The cookie had a unique fragrance, a bit earthy, from the rosemary. It's pretty subtle though and doesn't affect the flavour of the cookie. The supposed brown butter cookie tasted just like the basic butter and sugar cookie. The brown butter fragrance was not evident at all. The cookie texture was also quite stale.

The cookie started out promising but the dark chocolate quickly overpowered the unique fragrance of the rosemary. I wonder if dark chocolate was the right complement for this cookie. Something with a milder taste than dark chocolate would have been just right to showcase the unique fragrance of the cookie.

The premise of the cookie was interesting, but the actual cookie really didn't live up to expectations.

Ambitious Sailor

Ambitious Sailor is a basic butter and sugar cookie with dark chocolate.

This cookie is basically the Salt of the Earth cookie (milk and dark chocolate) but with dark chocolate only.

I have the same thoughts about this cookie. The cookie was stale and tough, overwhelming sweet, lacking a buttery aroma. While the chocolate is generous, it doesn't make up for the disappointing cookie base.

Busy Bee

Busy Bee is a honey and spice cookie with figs. The spices used are ginger and cinnamon.

This is one of the more unique cookies Folks and Stories has to offer. The honey and spice cookie base is not used in any of the other cookies. This cookie was noticeably more crumbly than the other cookies, and also did not have the stale taste of the other cookies. The spices used also came through in the aroma of the cookie, and the cookie reminded me of a cold winter in Scandinavia with a warm cup of hot chocolate. The figs are also a delightful addition. They complement the honey flavour very nicely and add different layers to the textures of the cookie.

Dark Knight

Dark Knight is doubled chocolate cookie flavoured with roasted coffee with milk and dark chocolate.

This is a very very chocolate heavy cookie. And not just any kind of chocolate, but the dark, broody kind of chocolate. If you love chocolate, you'll love this. If not, the overwhelming richness of the cookie will put you off chocolate for a while.

Although it is described as a dark chocolate cookie flavoured with roasted coffee beans, there was no hint of coffee flavour at all. And I later also noticed that the ingredients list on the box does not include coffee at all. If so, I don't really know why this is described as flavoured with coffee.

Overall, one of the better cookies from Folks and Stories.

Disclaimer: I had the cookies on the third day after they were baked. According to their packaging and staff, the cookies are "best consumed within 3 days" but "will last two weeks refrigerated".

Is it worth it?

Each cookie costs $3.80. For how it tasted, and the hassle of having to collect it from Bishan, it's really not worth it. I was very excited to try these interesting cookies, but they were an overwhelming disappointment.

Where do I get them?

You can order these cookies from their website (link).
