Eating an atas éclair has been a long-time dream of mine. I'm a snobby elite that despises those buffet chocolate éclairs that are so soggy and ugly. And I must gain the right to be snobby about it by eating atas éclairs.
Just joking. But on a serious note, I've always wanted to try those beautiful, delicate French éclairs that I always see on pinterest. I've also tried making my own éclairs in the past and of course that didn't work, so it made the longing for real éclairs stronger.
I've heard of L'éclair for some time now since they are pretty much the only establishment that does pretty éclairs.
It's a bit of a walk from the nearest MRT, in an obscure shopping centre, but when I eventually found it, I had to sit down and have a cup of atas tea as well. Something about the interior just invites you to take a break and just have a quiet afternoon there. Or maybe it's also the walk to get there.
Food
I got the Pistachio éclair ($8) and the Earl Grey Chocolate éclair ($8).
The Pistachio éclair was both filled and top with pistachio cream, which had a very robust and authentic pistachio flavour. Topped with some sliced strawberries, the sweetness of the strawberries meandered pleasantly through the flavour of the pistachio, complementing the pistachio flavour perfectly.
The Earl Grey Chocolate éclair was filled with earl grey cream with chocolate on top. The Earl Grey filling carried a light fragrance that didn't intrude upon the flavour of the chocolate but added a subtle complexity to it. And the blueberries on top added bursts of flavour every so often.
Accompanied by a small pot of Earl Grey ($5.50) that has been steeped to perfection such that there is no bitterness of astringency but only the unique fragrance of the tea.
The balance in the éclairs is perfect and allows you the deception that your life is going perfect, at least for this one moment.
Value
The éclairs are around $7.50 - $8.50 depending on the flavour. For a tiny pastry that can be eaten in three bites, that's pretty expensive. But the flavours are genuine and sincere and you can tell the quality of the ingredients are top notch.
It's worth it and it's a fair price, but it's definitely a treat.
It's a pretty short walk away from Dhoby Ghaut MRT, though in quite an obscure shopping mall.
