Matchaya Seasonals: Sakura Soft Serve
*cue dramatic lighting*
It's a long time coming but Matchaya has finally released their long awaited Sakura flavour. Just in time for the last of the Sakura falling into a pink carpet in Japan.
Last year I went to Japan to find the answer to the question "how does sakura taste". I came back with the very unimpressive answer of "not much". Sakura has such a subtle taste that any stronger flavour points to artificial flavouring being used in the ice cream.
So let's be real, we weren't expecting much here. The soul purpose of this cup of soft serve is for aesthetic fan service, and once we're done with that, it doesn't leave a very memorable impression on the taste buds. You could get vanilla ice cream, colour it pink, and not be able to tell the difference. Save for a very slight hint of a bitter, medicinal flavour that reminds one of cherry-flavoured cough medicine.
Sakura trees are after all cherry blossoms that do not bear fruit.
