TL;DR Good for when the mentaiko pasta craving hits

For my Mentaiko fix (that is not just aburi mentaiko mayo on everything), Kabe no Ana is my to-go destination for some good Japanese-Western dishes that incorporate Mentaiko. Mentaiko goes so well with creamy sauces and gives it a really different umami flavour, and a slightlyyyy spicy kick. And Kabe no Ana seems to be the only establishment around that has really taken on incorporating Mentaiko into cream sauces seriously.

We wanted to try something different this time, and they were having a Mentaiko Madness campaign, with special Mentaiko items.

We got the Mentaiko Gnocchi. I really loved the mentaiko cream sauce. The mentaiko added an umami flavour that was so addictive. I couldn't stop eating it. The ikura salmon roe also added delightful bursts of umami throughout, and added so much to the texture!

Unfortunately, the gnocchi was rather hard and dense. That's quite a pity, since this dish would have been absolutely perfect with light, pillow-y gnocchi.

We also got the Mentaiko Omu Rice. As usual, no complaints about the mentaiko cream sauce. This sauce was not as strong as the sauce in the gnocchi, but still absolutely delicious. There is also some seafood (squid, prawns) in the sauce which was pretty regular.

The omu rice part was rather average. Nothing to complain about but nothing outstanding either. It is a very good base for the sauce to shine though.

The sets came with a side of smoked duck and grapefruit salad, and a piece of breaded Iberico pork.

I liked the smoked duck salad, though the grapefruit was a bit too bitter for my liking.

The breaded pork is more breadcrumbs than pork, the actual pork is a very thin slice, and I wonder if breading it and deep-frying it was the best way to serve it. The onions in the salsa were pretty pungent too, and I was on the fence about this side.

The sets also come with a drink, ume sparkling juice, which is an italian sauce with some plum syrup. It's a bit more sour than sweet as italian sodas normally are, which makes for a refreshing change.

Overall, I still really enjoyed the meal, though I probably will order proven favourites like their Mentaiko pasta next time.

Value

Both sets were $22.90. It's fairly good value considering it includes the main, a drink, and the sides.

There's nothing that will cause queues to form anytime soon, but still makes for a very enjoyable meal.
